Armie Hammer to star in The Birth of a Nation
Armie Hammer has joined the historical drama about the slave rebellion in Virginia, The Birth of a Nation.
The film will be the directorial debut of Nate Parker, who has also written the screenplay and will star as Nat Turner.
The story follows Turner and a band of about 70 rebel slaves, who killed between 55 to 65 people in Virginia — the most ever killed in a slave uprising. The rebellion was stopped after two days, but Turner survived in hiding for more than two months.
The project’s title was intentionally selected to counter D. W. Griffith’s 1915 silent film, which covered the Civil War and Reconstruction eras. It is considered controversial due to its portrayal of black men as unintelligent and the Ku Klux Klan as heroes.
